SPJ Georgia and SPJ Kennesaw State student chapter are hosting Operation: Freelance, a two session workshop focused on the ins and outs of freelance journalism, on Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kennesaw State University campus in Kennesaw, Georgia, just north of Atlanta.
The first session will run from 10 a.m. to noon with three freelance pros leading the conversation on how to start freelancing, how to find work and some other freelancing best practices.
Our panelists for the first session include:
Paul Kvinta - Paul has written for many national magazines including National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Men's Journal, GQ, The New York Times Magazine and Popular Science. His essays have been broadcast on National Public Radio's "Weekend All Things Considered." He has been a finalist for the National Magazine Award for reporting and has won numerous other awards, including the Daniel Pearl Award for his story on human-wildlife conflict in India. He has been a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University and a Templeton Journalism Fellow in Science and Religion at Cambridge University in England.
Emily L. Foley - Emily is an experienced multimedia journalist who works in both print and broadcast media. Well-versed in the worlds of beauty, fashion and entertainment, Emily's work has been published in magazines such as Allure, O, The Oprah Magazine, Glamour and US Weekly, along with websites such as Refinery29.com and Elle.com. As a beauty and lifestyle expert, Emily's passion for the topic, attention to detail and ability to concisely convey her knowledge has been lauded by consumers and brands alike, while her high energy and conversational nature make her at once likeable and trustworthy. Whether she's on-camera sharing the latest beauty innovations or chatting alongside the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Samuel L. Jackson, Olivia Munn or Channing Tatum, Emily has the ability to make everyone feel like they're spending time with a dear friend – a trait she chalks up to her Southern upbringing (thanks, Mom!).
Katja Ridderbusch - Katja is a German-born, 20-year veteran of the media industry. Today, she works as an Atlanta-based senior foreign correspondent for German news media, including German daily nationals Die Welt and Tagesspiegel, news website Spiegel online and German national public radio Deutschlandfunk. She covers politics and business in the United States, with a strong focus on healthcare related topics. Prior to her immigration to the United States in 2005, Katja was Die Welt's foreign correspondent in Brussels, Belgium, covering the European Union and NATO. Following her assignment in Europe's capital, she authored the critically acclaimed book "Der Tross von Brüssel" ("The Brussels Entourage"). As Die Welt's military reporter, Katja traveled the Balkans extensively during the wars of the 1990s. Katja, who is a dual citizen of Germany and the United States, holds a master's degree in history from Freie Universität Berlin. She is a fellow of the distinguished German-American Arthur F. Burns program for journalists, a founding member of the Advisory Council to the Department of German Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, a member of the Atlanta Press Club and the American Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ). During the second session, we'll sit down with some seasoned editors who will talk about pitching stories and answer questions on freelancing for media organizations. The second session will be held from 1 to 3 p.m.

Mira Lowe - Mira is the Senior Editor for Features at CNN Digital, overseeing the entertainment, lifestyle and travel sections on CNN.com and mobile. She is responsible for key editorial initiatives, partnerships and multiplatform opportunities while leading her team to best tell stories and engage audiences using text, photos, video, interactives, tools and social media. Prior to joining the Turner Broadcasting Co. in Atlanta in 2012, Mira was the editor-in-chief of JET magazine in Chicago, where she became the first woman to helm the No. 1 African-American newsweekly. Her print experience also extends to newspapers, including Newsday, where she has worked as an editor and recruiter. An experienced journalist who loves new and old media, Mira is passionate about issues of leadership and personal branding, diversity and journalism education. She's taught journalism at Columbia University, her alma mater, York College, Loyola University, Northwestern University and Marquette University as well as lectured on diversity and recruitment issues at various colleges and conferences. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the Online News Association (ONA) and Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS). A Brooklyn, N.Y., native, Mira graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor's degree in television and radio, and from Columbia with a master's in journalism. Mira is co-author of "Heart and Soul: A Marriage of Love, Faith and Journalism" monograph, published in 2007 by the World Journalism Institute, and an essayist for "Black Women Redefined" (paperback edition, 2012). Allison Entrekin - Allison is senior editor at Atlanta Magazine Custom Media, which publishes travel titles such as Southbound and Georgia Travel Guide. Her previous editorial work includes positions as editor-in-chief of Simply Buckhead, managing editor of Flavors, and contributing editor for Jezebel. She is also a prolific freelancer, penning articles for publications such as Travel + Leisure, USA Today, and Cigar Aficionado. Her book, "For the Love of Dogs: An A-Z Primer for Dog Lovers of All Ages," was published by Triumph Books, a Random House imprint. Allison received her bachelor's degree in public relations from the University of Florida (a top-ten program) and her master's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia (a top-five program). She is a member of the prestigious Society of American Travel Writers.
James Mallory - James is a communications consultant and part-time college instructor at Kennesaw State University who specializes in editing and writing with a particular emphasis on business leadership and corporate strategy. He spent 24 years at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution where he retired as Senior Managing Editor/VP News and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the newsroom. James also held other senior editor and department leadership roles at the newspaper. He joined the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1988 as a business reporter. His other newspaper experience includes editing and reporting at the Detroit News; business reporter at the Grand Rapids Press; and reporter at the Lansing State Journal. James has also served as teacher, coach and mentor to professional and student journalists across the country. A long-time advocate of newsroom diversity, he received the APME Robert G. McGruder Award for Diversity Leadership in 2012. James earned his Master of Arts in Journalism at Michigan State University and completed his Bachelor of Business Administration at Western Michigan University.
